58-Acre Sports Complex to Bring Needed Recreation Space to Alameda

If Alameda voters approve the Alameda Point Revitalization Initiative on the November ballot, a state-of-the-art sports complex will be built at no cost to current Alameda residents.

The sports complex will include soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, lacrosse fields, a football field, a gymnasium with indoor basketball and volleyball courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, a BMX/mountain bike skills course, potentially an Olympic-size swimming pool for lap swimming and a separate spray ground and recreational pool for children, playgrounds, picnic areas for families, a teen center for after school programs and a shoreline trail providing public access to the water along the estuary and bayfront.

“This is exactly the type of fields and facilities Alameda has needed for too long,” said Ron Matthews, President of Alameda Little League and Alameda Babe Ruth. “Alameda kids have been dealing with a shortage of fields and sports facilities for years and this will give us the quality fields our kids deserve.”

The Sports Complex will include facilities for both youth and adult use. On-site parking will provide convenient access for the public. A bicycle and pedestrian network at Alameda Point will provide access to the sports complex for youth and families on bikes or on foot.

The construction and ongoing operation of the Alameda Sports Complex will be financed through a combination of developer funding and taxes and fees paid by future residents and businesses at Alameda Point. Existing Alameda residents will not be taxed.

“Even though the funding for this project comes from the new residents and businesses at Alameda Point, this is a community facility that will be open and available for all Alameda residents to enjoy,” said Pat Keliher, Vice President of SunCal Companies, the firm partnered with the City of Alameda to develop and implement a Master Plan for Alameda Point. “We set out to design a facility that would serve not just Alameda Point but the residents of the entire island.” Alameda residents will continue to play a critical role in developing the final design of the sports complex. Public participation is important to ensure the final design of the facility is aligned with the community’s needs.
