 Signature Gathering Underway, Gaining Momentum

The initiative to clean up, reuse and revitalize the old Navy base on Alameda Point is well underway with signature gatherers reaching out to voters all over the island.

The Alameda Point Revitalization Initiative has been submitted to the City of Alameda and is the first step toward removing the Navy’s toxic legacy and rehabilitating the land for all Alameda to enjoy.

This community has worked long and hard on the plan that will be a wonderful attribute to the City of Alameda. The hard work must continue in order to reach the potential of this ambitious plan. We are excited to take another positive step in this direction.

Mayor Beverly Johnson has said: “This is a plan that will benefit all of Alameda and now is the time for voters to take a close look so that when the time comes to cast their ballots, they can join me in support of this important base reuse effort.” We could not agree more.

The plan, which included input from hundreds of Alameda residents, will require SunCal to fund the clean-up of the contaminated soil and environment to ensure Alameda Point is safe for residents. The plan includes trails and walkways that provide public access to the water and some of the most beautiful views in the Bay Area. It also features soccer, baseball and football fields, basketball courts and walking trails that will be available to all Alameda residents.

      Other benefits include:

·         A new library, fire facility, and emergency services

·         Public transit improvements and connections to BART, busses and ferries

·         Restoration of  historic buildings and ensures new buildings are consistent with the character of Alameda

·         Attracts stable companies to Alameda that will provide good-paying local jobs and generate revenue for city services and Alameda Schools

·         Quality housing that is consistent with the character of Alameda and helps protect property values throughout Alameda

·         Allows Alameda residents the opportunity to approve or disapprove of the plan

This is an exciting time for Alameda and in the coming weeks we will be doing everything we can to make sure island residents fully understand and appreciate this initiative. Tell us what you think on our survey page.

We hope you are as excited as we are by this plan and we hope you will support the initiative for all the positive things it can do for the City of Alameda.
